Spencer Carlson: The Opportunity

Spencer Carlson Lacrosse

Coming from Granite Bay, California, 2017 Defender Spencer Carlson had to work extra hard to get where he is today. He wasn’t from a lacrosse hotbed like Long Island or Baltimore, he was at a high school that only had one Division 1 lacrosse player ever. In order to overcome his adversity, Carlson put his head down and got to work. Now he is about to have the chance to compete for time at the University at Albany, a team bound for a deep run in the playoffs during the 2018 season. In addition, he earned a spot at the Adrenaline All-American game, the Under Armour games, and the Adrenaline Tropics.

For Carlson, the recruiting process wasn’t easy. “I had to do a lot of traveling during my summer breaks to the east coast to get exposure, because coaches do not come to my area to recruit. I was just the second kid ever from my high-school to play Division 1. The summer after freshman year I was getting a lot of encouragement from my high school and club coaches with them telling me that Division 1 should be a legitimate goal of mine which pushed me to work harder.”

Now, Carlson gets the chance to play for legendary head coach Scott Marr, a coach known for his fast-paced play and incredible lessons. “Coach Marr, Gleason, and Thompson brought me in and made me feel like I was apart of the family. I love their style of coaching and the fast pace style of play that they run. I can’t wait to learn from them for the next 4 years.”

Last fall, Carlson had a hip surgery that he never fully recovered from. It took him out of his senior season, and it has been a long road to recovery. This summer, he has been doing everything he can to get ready for college. “I’m excited to get after it in fall ball this year.”

Carlson’s story is a great lesson for all athletes, as he was able to commit to a great college even though he lived on the other side of the country. Here is his advice to younger players:

“Focus on developing yourself as the best Student, athlete, and person you can be and Find the balance between those three things. Never stop working to achieve your goals because with hard work, dedication anything is possible.”

We will get to see Carlson compete for the Great Danes very soon. With proper coaching, Carlson can thrive at the next level and represent his area for years to come.
